1. expand — گسترش دادن، توسعه دادن، منبسط شدن

ریشه لاتین expandere (ex- بیرون + pandere گستردن). "We will expand our business as soon as we locate a new building." رسمی: "The university plans to expand its research facilities over the next decade." غیررسمی: "My waistline seems to expand every time I eat pizza!"
اشتقاق: expansion/expanse (اسم)، expandable/expansive (صفت)، expansively (قید). مترادف: enlarge, extend, grow, widen. متضاد: shrink, contract, deflate.
تله: expand در برابر extend — expand یعنی بزرگ‌شدن در همه‌ی جهات (Metals expand when heated)، extend یعنی بلندتر شدن در یک جهت یا زمان (We extended the deadline). نکته کنکوری: expand on = درباره‌ی نکته‌ای بیشتر توضیح دادن ("Can you expand on that point?").

2. alter — تغییر دادن، عوض کردن (معمولاً جزئی)

از لاتین alterare (از alter = دیگری). "I altered my typical lunch and had a steak instead." "Dorothy agreed to alter my dress if I would reveal its cost to her." رسمی: "The company had to alter its marketing strategy due to the economic downturn."
اشتقاق: alteration/alternative (اسم)، alterable/alternate (صفت). متضاد: keep, maintain, preserve.
تله: alter در برابر change — change کلمه‌ی عمومی برای هرگونه دگرگونی است؛ alter برای تغییرات جزئی/تدریجی/ساختاری به کار می‌رود (alter a garment = لباس را اندازه‌گیری کردن) — نمی‌گوییم "alter a light bulb".

3. mature — بالغ، پخته، رسیده؛ (فعل) بالغ شدن، سررسید شدن

از لاتین maturus (رسیده، آماده). "I could tell Mitch was mature from the way he persisted in his work." رسمی: "The investment will mature in ten years." غیررسمی: "It's time for you to act like a mature adult!"
اشتقاق: maturity/maturation (اسم)، premature (نارس). متضاد: immature, childish, undeveloped.

4. sacred — مقدس، محترم، دارای ارزش والا

از لاتین sacer (مقدس، وقف‌شده). "Her sacred medal had to be sold because the family was in urgent need of money." "Kate made a sacred promise to her parents." رسمی: "The right to freedom of speech is considered sacred in many democracies."
تله: sacred در برابر holy — holy کاملاً مذهبی است (The Holy Bible)؛ sacred دامنه‌ی وسیع‌تری دارد و برای ارزش‌های غیرمذهبی هم به کار می‌رود (a sacred promise, sacred memory, my Sunday coffee ritual is sacred).

5. revise — بازبینی و اصلاح کردن، تجدید نظر کردن

از لاتین revisere (re- دوباره + visere بررسی کردن). "My family revised its weekend plans when the weather turned hazy." "The dictionary was revised and then published in a more expensive edition."
نکته کنکوری مهم: در انگلیسی بریتانیایی، revise یا revise for an exam یعنی «مرور کردن درس‌ها برای امتحان» ("I'm revising for my math test") — این معنا در آمریکایی رایج نیست اما ممکن است در کنکور بیاید.

6. pledge — متعهد شدن، قول رسمی دادن؛ (اسم) تعهد، پیمان

از فرانسه‌ی قدیم plege (گروگان، وثیقه). "Before the grand jury, the sinister gangster pledged to tell the whole truth." رسمی: "All delegates signed the pledge to reduce carbon emissions."
تله: pledge در برابر promise — promise قول معمولی؛ pledge قولی رسمی، جدی، عمومی و اغلب کتبی با بار حقوقی/سیاسی سنگین‌تر (pledge of allegiance = سوگند وفاداری، election pledge = وعده انتخاباتی — این کلمه را برای قول‌های روزمره به‌کار نبرید).

7. casual — اتفاقی، غیررسمی، خودمانی، بی‌تکلف؛ (اسم) لباس راحتی

از لاتین casualis (اتفاقی، از casus = رویداد). "As the villain stole the money, he walked away in a casual manner." رسمی: "The office has a casual dress code on Fridays."
اشتقاق: casualness (اسم)، casually (قید). مترادف: informal, relaxed, random, unplanned. متضاد: formal, planned, deliberate.

8. pursue — دنبال کردن، تعقیب کردن، پیگیری کردن (هدف، شغل، شخص)

از لاتین prosequi (pro- جلو + sequi دنبال کردن). "We pursued the bicycle thief until he vanished from our vision." "The government is pursuing an aggressive policy to combat inflation."
اشتقاق: pursuit/pursuer (اسم). تله: pursue در برابر chase — chase تعقیب فیزیکی و سریع و موقتی؛ pursue هم فیزیکی هم استعاری و بلندمدت/متعهدانه است (pursue happiness, pursue a dream).

9. unanimous — هم‌رأی، متفق‌القول، با توافق کامل

از لاتین unanimus (unus یک + animus ذهن). "The class was unanimous in wanting to eliminate study halls." رسمی: "The board reached a unanimous decision to approve the merger."
اشتقاق: unanimity (اسم)، unanimously (قید). نکته: همیشه با decision, vote, verdict می‌آید — این ترکیب‌ها را یک‌جا حفظ کنید (a unanimous decision/verdict).

10. fortunate — خوش‌شانس، خوش‌بخت، مبارک

از لاتین fortunatus (از fortuna = بخت). "Wesley was fortunate to have an adequate sum of money in the bank." رسمی: "We are fortunate to live in an era of unprecedented technological progress."
اشتقاق: fortune/misfortune (اسم)، fortunately (قید). قید محبوب: fortunately از پرکاربردترین قیدهای شروع جمله در متون انگلیسی است.

11. pioneer — پیشگام، پیشاهنگ، اولین فاتح؛ (فعل) پیشگامی کردن

از فرانسه‌ی قدیم peonier (سرباز پیاده، کارگر راه‌ساز). "My grandfather was a pioneer in selling wholesale products." "England was a pioneer in building large vessels for tourists."
کاربرد مدرن مهم: امروزه pioneer برای هر کسی که در زمینه‌ی جدیدی پیشرو است به‌کار می‌رود: a pioneer of the digital age, a pioneer in artificial intelligence — این معنا خیلی رایج است و فقط محدود به مهاجران قدیم آمریکا نیست.

12. innovative — نوآورانه، مبتکرانه، خلاقانه

از فعل innovate، از لاتین innovatus (in- درون + novus جدید). "The innovative ads for the computers won many new customers." رسمی: "The company is known for its innovative approach to technology."
اشتقاق: innovation/innovator (اسم)، innovate (فعل). تله: innovative در برابر inventive — inventive یعنی خلق چیزی کاملاً جدید (اختراع)؛ innovative یعنی ارائه‌ی ایده‌های جدید برای بهبود چیزهای موجود یا روش‌های جدید انجام کار — بیشتر در کسب‌وکار و فرآیندها به‌کار می‌رود.
