این درس دربارهی توصیف شهر است: اینکه یک شهر کجاست، چه شکلی است، و چه جاهای دیدنی دارد. سه محور اصلی دارد: موقعیت جغرافیایی، توصیف، و پرسش از امکانات شهر.

صفتهای توصیف شهر: old (قدیمی)، new، big / large (بزرگ)، small، clean (تمیز)، famous (مشهور)، special (ویژه)، great (عالی).
جهتها: in the center / in the north / in the south / in the east / in the west / in the north-west / in the south-east / near the capital. روی نقشههای انگلیسی اینها را مخفف مینویسند: N, S, E, W, NW, SE.
ساختار ۱ — پرسش از موقعیت شهر
Where is [city]? → Where is Isfahan? — It's in the center of Iran.
Where is Maku? — It's in the north-west. | Where is Karaj? — It's near the capital.
نکته: جواب همیشه با It's شروع میشود، نه با تکرار دوبارهی اسم شهر.
ساختار ۲ — توصیف با What's it like?
این سؤال یعنی «چهجور جایی است؟». What's Isfahan like? و جوابهای ممکن:
It's old. | It's a big city. | It's very clean. | It's a big and clean city.
یعنی بعد از It's میتوانی فقط صفت بیاوری، یا a + صفت + اسم، یا دو صفت با and.
ساختار ۳ — be famous for
[City] is famous for + اسم یا فعل + ing
Isfahan is famous for its mosques. | Shiraz is famous for its gardens.
چون for یک حرف اضافه است، بعدش فعل ساده نمیآید:
درست: famous for having many mosques — غلط: famous for have many mosques

جواب کوتاه: Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. — Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
در مکالمهی واقعی جوابهای طبیعیتر هم داریم: Yes, many. / Yes, some great ones. / Yes, a new one.
قانون some و any: در جملهی مثبت some و در جملهی سؤالی و منفی any.
There are some great museums. | Are there any museums? | There aren't any restaurants.
نکته: There is را میشود کوتاه کرد (There's)، ولی There are را نه — چیزی به اسم There're نداریم.
تلفظ
- صدای th در south و north مثل «ث» است، نه «ت» و نه «س»؛ نوک زبان باید بین دندانها باشد.
- museum = /mjuːˈziːəm/ با تکیه روی هجای دوم، ولی stadium = /ˈsteɪdiəm/ با تکیه روی هجای اول.
- در restaurant، حروف au اغلب خوانده نمیشوند: «رِسترَنت».
- در palace حرف e آخر خوانده نمیشود: «پَلِس». در mosque هم que فقط «ک» خوانده میشود: «ماسک».
نکتههای فراتر از کتاب
- کلمهی capital از لاتینِ caput به معنی «سر» میآید؛ پایتخت یعنی «سرِ کشور». همین ریشه در captain و chapter هم هست.
- downtown آمریکایی است؛ بریتانیاییها بیشتر city centre میگویند.
- There is/are در گذشته میشود There was / There were: There were gardens here years ago.
- What's it like? فقط برای شهر نیست: What's the weather like? (هوا چطور است؟) / What's your teacher like?
نمونه سؤال (کامل با پاسخ)
در جملهی زیر همهی خطاهای گرامری را پیدا کن و جمله را درست بنویس:
"My city are famous for have a big museum, and there is many old bridges."
پاسخ — سه خطا دارد:
۱. are ← is: فاعل my city مفرد است، پس فعل to be هم باید مفرد باشد.
۲. famous for have ← famous for having: بعد از حرف اضافهی for فعل ساده نمیآید؛ باید ing بگیرد.
۳. there is many ← there are many: چون bridges جمع است، باید there are بیاید.
جملهی درست: "My city is famous for having a big museum, and there are many old bridges."
ریدینگ — یک متن کامل با سؤال
Yazd is an old city in the center of Iran. It's famous for its beautiful mosques and traditional houses. There are many narrow streets in the old part of the city, but there isn't a big airport near it.
۱) Where is Yazd? پاسخ: It's in the center of Iran — همان جملهی اول متن.
۲) What is Yazd famous for? پاسخ: Its beautiful mosques and traditional houses — یعنی همان چیزی که بعد از famous for آمده.
۳) Is there a big airport near Yazd? پاسخ: No, there isn't — متن صریحاً همین را میگوید.
مهمترین نکات امتحانی: جواب Where is...? همیشه با It's شروع میشود | بعد از famous for اسم یا فعل ingدار میآید | برای مفرد Is there a و برای جمع Are there any | در جملهی مثبت some و در سؤالی و منفی any.
